Living the Dream of Independence - The Nebraska Center for the Blind

The realization of true independence begins with high expectations. Blindness presents many challenges, and in order to achieve true independence as a blind person, you must be prepared to take charge of your life. To do this, you will need to have proper training and the opportunity to gain experience. The Nebraska Training Center for the Blind can provide you with the training and opportunities you will need.

Before you can live the dream of independence, you must believe in your heart that it is truly possible for you as a blind person to take charge of your life. For this reason, the Training Center focuses on assisting each individual to develop a positive and resilient philosophy of blindness.

Before you can take charge of your life, you must first master the skills that will allow you to be independent and self-sufficient. For this reason, the Nebraska Training Center provides Structured Discovery based training in the areas of independent cane travel, home management, communications, Braille, and wood shop.

As a blind person, many myths, misconceptions, and misguided reactions related to blindness will confront you in your daily life. Before you can appropriately respond to them, you need to internalize your own positive and resilient philosophy of blindness and to develop the understanding, experience and confidence to stand up for yourself, the knowledge to be able to educate the public about blindness, and be very knowledgeable of the resources that are available to you. For this reason, the Nebraska Training Center provides individuals with the knowledge, information, and experience necessary to meet these challenges.

Before you, as a blind person, can find acceptance in your community and place of work, you must have personal qualities, such as self-discipline, reliability, proper appearance and grooming, and a healthy work ethic, which are equal to, or exceed, those of your normally sighted counterparts. For this reason, the Nebraska Training Center assists each individual to develop the personal skills and qualities that will lead to personal success.

Before you can take your place in society, you must be prepared to give back to your community, as well as other blind people. For this reason, the Nebraska Training Center provides opportunities for each individual to mentor other blind people, become involved with blind consumer organizations, volunteer in the community, and to educate the public about blindness.

This comprehensive 8-hour a day, 5-day a week program is located in Lincoln, Nebraska. It offers intensive training and instruction in areas such as independent travel using a white cane, public transportation, community access, home management, apartment living, typing, adaptive technology, Braille, and woodworking. Training may last up to nine months as students learn to apply alternative techniques to solve problems facing them in everyday life. If you are ready to move forward with your life, and to take on the challenges of one of the most effective training programs available anywhere, then the Nebraska Training Center for the Blind is the right choice for your future.
